The school’s football coach Jay Long said Goll was one of the happiest people he had ever met.
“Our hearts are broken for Eric’s family. They have our condolences and our prayers,” Long said in a statement.
CHADRON, Neb. Chadron police and the Dawes County Attorney’s office are investigating Goll’s death.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Goll’s family, teammates, and friends from the entire Chadron State College community,” Chadron State College president Dr. Randy Rhine said in a statement.
Chadron State College officials said 20-year-old freshman Eric Goll of Haines City, Florida, was taken from the practice field to Chadron Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 12:30 p.m.. — A football player at a small college in western Nebraska has died following the team’s practice Thursday.
Chadron State College says it will cooperate in the police department’s investigation.
ranked opponents under Kevin Sumlin. Alabama Crimson Tide
Note: Against the spread (ATS) and total picks are in bold. While they went on to have a great season each time, none of those teams were great off the bat. Odds are courtesy of the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook. The Fighting Irish are one of five teams in the country to return two QBs that beat a Power 5 team last year. If you look back at 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2015 — the four previous times the Tide started with a first-year QB under Saban — those QBs combined for three TDs and six INTs, along with six total sacks. With that feeling, I see A&M coming out with a huge effort at home in front of one of the best home crowds in the country. Maybe it’s also the reason they haven’t won a national title outright since 1989. Navy Midshipmen
We know how good Sooners RB Samaje Perine is, as he needs only 1,054 rushing yards to become No. wouldn’t trade them for anyone else,” makes me think that that he feels more confident in this defense than he did last year.
The pick: Notre Dame 20, Texas 13 (under the total of 60 points)
North Carolina Tar Heels ( 3) vs. The FPI calls for Alabama by five, so it too thinks this one could be closer than most might think.
Pick: Oklahoma 49, Houston 24 (over the total of 68 points)
UCLA Bruins ( 3) at Texas A&M Aggies
Coughlin:?This is my favorite matchup of experienced quarterbacks in the opening weekend. Yes, Nick Chubb is ready to go, but the Georgia QB situation scares me.
Oklahoma Sooners (-11.5) vs.? Houston Cougars
After an impressive 2015 season, “Stanford Steve” Coughlin of SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt, and Chris Fallica of ESPN Stats & Information and College GameDay are back. Texas Longhorns
2014 season record:
Fallica: 44-40 ATS (52.4 percent)
Coughlin: 45-28-1 ATS (60.8 percent)
Fallica: I am well aware of the success that Nick Saban has had at Alabama in season openers — for those who aren’t, he’s 9-0, winning each of them by double figures (by an average margin of victory of 27.3 PPG). 1 on the all-time Oklahoma rushing list; he starts the season in 10th. We kind of know what we have with Greyson Lambert and Brice Ramsey, so will Jacob Eason be ready to play and match UNC point-for-point in his first college game? The Bulldogs also have some concerns on the front seven and that’s not good, as UNC possesses one of the more underrated backs in the nation in Elijah Hood, a deep WR corps and QB Mitch Trubisky.
ATS pick: Texas A&M 31, UCLA 23
Coughlin: My partner, Chris “The Bear” Fallica, on the Behind The Bets: The College Years podcast last week, brought up the question of who among all of the SEC Coaches is under the most pressure in Week 1. That is a sizable difference from the Vegas line, and I have to simply trust our power ratings here. The trend of coaches facing the school they left in Week 1 continues with this game, as Aggies offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone faces the Bruins. And, in what might be the most important factor, they have senior quarterback Kevin Anderson, who threw for 3,183 yards and 32 TDs last year. Take the Rams to cover.
Do you think Bob Stoops and his staff have been drilling those things into the minds of the Oklahoma players? Yeah, I do too. There also isn’t a better coach to handle multiple QBs, at least to me, than Brian Kelly. Three of those season openers were against Power 5 teams, and two of them were a pair of 10-point wins over Virginia Tech and West Virginia, to go along with the 18-point win over Wisconsin last year.
I know UNC couldn’t stop Baylor’s running game in the bowl game last year, but I’m willing to think the Tar Heels will use that as a motivation this week, knowing they must improve vs. Ohio is breaking in an almost entirely new secondary, and it could be susceptible to some big plays. I also think all of the intangibles favor OU here. Georgia Bulldogs
I think the Crimson Tide will play it fairly safe on offense and USC has enough skill on both sides of the ball, despite having a new starter of its own, to hang around. Week 1 and you’re picking Fordham? Really?
Fallica: I like the Tar Heels in this game. 1 target, Sterling Shepard, and how well he adapts without Shepard is the biggest determining factor in whether or not Oklahoma has a successful season.
ATS pick: North Carolina 36, Georgia 27 (Confidence 7/10)
Fordham Rams ( 26.5) vs. Many have answered with Les Miles, which I can’t argue with, but I’d have to say it’s Aggies’ head coach Kevin Sumlin. Head coach Brian Kelly has said Malik Zaire and DeShone Kizer will both play in this game, which I love, and here’s why; both guys throw the ball accurately, both guys have great field presence and awareness and both guys have playmaking ability, if things break down. The only big question is whether or not the UCLA offensive line can hold its own against Myles Garrett and Daeshon Hall. I think the Bruins go into College Station, win and set themselves up for a run at the College Football Playoff.
ATS pick: Ohio 40, Texas State 24 (Confidence 5/10)
That means something to me because I think “Chief” is the best at what he does in the country. I see a big day for the A&M wide receivers — gig ‘em and lay the 3 points.
ATS pick: Alabama 31, USC 21 (Confidence 6/10)
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-3.5) vs. As big as the perception that Kyle Field is a big home field advantage is, keep in mind that the Aggies are 1-6 there vs. Larry Fedora has had some early-season struggles in Chapel Hill, but I get the sense that this game might be different. Take the over.
2015 season record:
Fallica:?53-40-3 ATS (55.2 percent)
Coughlin:?38-29-3 ATS (54.3 percent)
The Cougars lost a larger number of key contributors than one may realize. and not transferring.
ATS pick: UCLA 28, Texas A&M 24 (Confidence 8/10)
USC Trojans ( 11.5) vs.
Fallica: I think the UCLA defense has a chance to be very good this season, and the Bruins have a huge edge in the QB position in this matchup. With talk of past preseason disappointments, along with hearing about Houston both potentially joining the Big 12 and being ready for a stage like this, Houston has become a trendy College Football Playoff pick.
With all that said, they are going to get all they can handle from a hungry and energized Longhorn squad. The Rams come into this game with first year Head coach Andrew Breiner, but he is in his fifth year on the Fordham staff after serving as the passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach in his first four years. Why does this matter? Under Breiner’s tutelage, the Fordham offense has ranked at the top of the NCAA FCS in each of the past four years. the number. I’m really interested to see the development of Sooners QB Baker Mayfield without his No. I’d be surprised if this was close in the fourth quarter.
Yes, I am serious. I don’t think this will be an issue with the team chemistry either, because when both guys are out there, they will be trying to be better than the other guys and, last I checked, athletes are best when they are competing… I see Texas having some issues with their QB play and see the edge Notre Dame has at the position as the difference in a low-scoring game. That’s not an entirely bad thing, as it means that starters could be playing a lot longer, even if they’re well behind. Just think about some of the names on that list. The Rams have the firepower to stay within striking distance in this game, and Navy returns only one starter on offense, which hopefully means the Midshipmen will be a little rusty with the ball in their hands. I hear Josh Rosen loves the new offensive scheme — note that former offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone is now at Texas A&M — and I don’t think there will be a drop-off at all at the RB position with Texas native Soso Jamabo replacing Paul Perkins.
Fallica:? The Football Power Index sees a ton of value here, expecting a 19-point win for Oklahoma. Take the under.
The last time we saw Trevor Knight, he was 5-of-16 with an interception as the Sooners nearly coughed up a huge lead last year vs TCU, when Baker Mayfield was sidelined with a concussion. Every week during the college football season, they’ll give their best bets for picking the weekend’s top college football games and, as a bonus, give one pick apiece free of charge. Withers has seen a lot of turnover on the team for a variety of reasons, so the roster numbers are a bit low. The combination of defensive pressure and the life of the 12th man, it seems like it’ll be too much for Sophomore QB Josh Rosen. There are a couple of reasons to like Texas State here; QB Tyler Jones returns, and the defense can’t help but be better with Withers on the sideline. So why am I so hesitant now to lay the 11.5? I guess the uncertainty at QB for the Tide has me a little concerned, at least right off the bat. one of the best backs in the country. Take into account that the Sooners have Ohio State and a trip to TCU within the first four games of the year, and it’s easy to see how the Cougars will have Oklahoma’s full attention. If it falls to the Sooners, they won’t get talked about until November. They also have junior running back Chase Edmonds, the 2016 Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. In looking back at last year, Houston kind of had a perfect storm: It caught Louisville early in the year when the Cards’ QB situation was a mess, it had a couple of home comeback wins and held a huge emotional edge over Florida State in their bowl game.
PickCenter . Not to put any more pressure on Cougars QB Greg Ward Jr., but no other team in the country has more to lose than Houston. To hear defensive coordinator John Chavis this past week at his press conference saying, “We’ve got the best pair of DEs in the country … After the season Houston had last year, you can bet that Tom Herman’s crew has the full attention of Mike and Bob Stoops too. I trust the UNC offense more than any other unit on the field here.
Fallica: The Everett Withers era begins in San Marcos, and that alone should give a boost to a program that took a step back last year, going 3-9 and just 2-9 vs.
ATS pick: Navy 42, Fordham 21
Texas State Bobcats ( 21) at Ohio Bobcats
Coughlin: I know what you’re saying. FPI projects this to be a 13-point win for Ohio, so I’ll put some faith in our power ratings and show some love for the underdog.
Coughlin: Notre Dame is playing a true road game in a season opener for the first time since 2006 — something only the Irish could pull off. I see both offenses having big days and see a bunch of points being scored. Houston led the country in takeaways, and they are going to have to create numerous turnovers to hang around in this game
Now whichever hobby you may be interested in, it is essential to pursue it either for pleasure, enjoyment, leisure, or an altogether different degree of happiness and satisfaction.
There is a popular saying which goes, “Lucky are those who have time after work for pursuing their hobby, but luckiest are those for whom work itself is a hobby”. As we don’t wish to discriminate against an individual’s choice of hobbies, we thought of listing them in an alphabetical order.
Studying dream interpretations
Diving. Mountain expeditions
Indian dance styles
Hip hop dance
Racing sports cars
A hobby is an activity that we all love and enjoy. On that note, let us have a look at a comprehensive hobbies list, and one which includes a diverse list of hobbies and interests for people of all ages – children, adults, elders, retired citizens, etc.
Hot air balloon rides
Palmistry and numerology
Learning foreign languages
That was a long, long list of hobbies, wasn’t it? Before signing off, I leave you with a little bit of parting advice. That way, you will enjoy it much more and to the fullest.
Wet plate photography
Learning tarot card reading
Listening to online music
Having a birdhouse
Making clay sculptures
Generally speaking, there are many types of hobbies that we get to see around us. For many, collecting postage stamps can be an enjoyable pastime, whereas for others, the interest lies in a variety of extreme sports such as snowboarding down icy mountain slopes. However, there are some daredevils out there who love to ride motorcycles as well. Arts and crafts, sports, performing arts, culinary arts, social service, gardening, traveling, collecting souvenirs, etc., are a few things that come to mind when we think of the word ‘hobbies’. Regardless of the hobby (or hobbies) you select, try not to look at it as a way of filling your pocket. But is that all the list should include? Surely there has to be a larger variety of hobbies out there. Let it be a way of achieving inner satisfaction, peace of mind, and experiencing happiness. Most people assume that typically, a majority of women will be interested in knitting or sewing as a hobby. Why don’t we go over a more specific list, shall we?

(However, an HBO sports program attempted to locate one of these ventures in Aruba, and ultimately found that the genuine server was in a residential neighborhood in Bethlehem, Pa.) And the Caribbean nations would like to keep their haven status.
It’s not because they operate in any fundamentally different way. . But they say the more bettors, the better. But according to Inland CEO Don Speer, elusive profits need not be one of them. And for sports bettors – who make up a majority of online gamblers, according to industry insiders – the ease of using cyberbookies can’t be beat.
Does the seeming invincibility of online gambling make it an enticing business? Jason Ader of Bear Stearns, urges caution. 474, introduced into the Senate by Arizona’s John Kyl in 1997 as the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act.
So how is it that these companies appear to operate legally, but a dozen Caribbean cowboys found themselves under felony indictment?
The prosecutors’ focus on sports bets appears to stem from legal precedent in the law they relied on. In 1997, published reports put the total number of operating online casinos at 15. … That figure exaggerates the size of the Internet gambling sector, since some companies operate more than one online betting parlor. “Federal legislation will make it difficult but not impossible for Internet gamblers in the U.S. His equal partner is Australian tycoon Kerry Packer of the Crown Casino in Victoria. Her higher-ups in the Justice Department appear to agree. But the travails associated with fending off lawsuits have essentially put the company out of business.
All the sites indicted by the U.S. In 1998, the Senate passed, by a large margin, an amendment prohibiting Internet gambling, but that bill died before becoming law.
Is Microsoft betting too?
The potential action is too compelling for even the largest tech tycoons to resist. One Australian state, Queensland, is already awarding licenses for online gambling, and others may follow soon.
Nonetheless, some experts think the case could be made to stick. I’ve not had problems being paid.”
Similarly, the Las Vegas-based public company American Wagering, owner of Leroy’s Horse and Sports Place in Nevada, also operates a sports gambling site located in Canberra called MegaSports (www.megasports.com.au). If an activity is prohibited in the physical world but not on the Internet, the Internet becomes a safe haven for that criminal activity.
But even if Congress comes up with the best-crafted legislation in history, there are significant factors beyond its control. Blackjack players can very easily count cards, or even consult odds charts; the Kennyrogerscasino.com site actually has a printable chart showing the best strategy for every possible hand of blackjack. Kyl introduced a revised version earlier this year, removing some of the more onerous and hard-to-enforce provisions. He claims Inland’s Internet gambling business went slightly into the black in March, on annualized revenues of about $1 million. Casino games are available on a site or via downloadable software. The minimum amount to begin an account varies. “We get daily reports, and you’ll see these people who spend a couple of hours gambling, and the total amount they bet is like $1.81,” says Thomas Holmes, Inland’s head of technology. Today, a roster on one “gambling portal” site lists well over 200. But as more and more traditional firms become involved, the consumer will look for the brand name.
But over the last several months, at least some traditional casinos have pursued the time-honored strategy of joining an Internet gambling trend that they can’t beat. In November 1998, for example, a division of Hilton Hotels acquired the company that runs Centrebet, a Web and telephone sports-wagering system based in Australia (www.centrebet.com.au). In the ’70s, Atlantic City legalized casino gambling; in the ensuing decades, state lotteries, Indian casinos, gaming ships, offtrack betting parlors and card clubs have sprouted across the landscape. As Timothy L. Together, these sites have about 4,300 registered customers in 96 countries around the world. Legislation tied to a particular technology may quickly become obsolete and require further amendment.
Finally, the DoJ believes that any federal law must recognize that the Internet is different from other communications media: It’s a multifaceted communications medium that allows for both point-to-point transmission between two parties (like the telephone), as well as the widespread dissemination of information to a vast audience (like a newspaper). But following a 1997 indictment, the state of Missouri settled a suit against the company and its president, Michael Simone, for about $35,000. Nor would it prohibit online fantasy sports leagues, online lotteries in states where they are legal, or online betting on any live horse race where it would otherwise be lawful to wager. attorney for the Southern District of New York, indicted 14 managers of six Internet companies for offering gambling on their sites. In most cases, this means operating out of Australia. “The telephone is being used to facilitate these wagers and I believe the government has a solid case,” explains Tony Cabot, a Las Vegas-based gaming lawyer and author of a book on Internet gaming. Attorney White has proceeded slowly and quietly.
More than a year later, however, no cases have come to trial, and nine defendants have accepted plea bargains for state misdemeanor charges with no jail time. The Standard obtained a Department of Justice analysis of the bill S. Anyone over the age of 18 can set up an account with Centrebet and place money on a variety of worldwide sporting events, including U.S. college and professional sports.
You might think that the prospect of competing against the likes of Microsoft would terrify a $20 million company like Inland. Packer is a man with a voracious gambling appetite. For one thing, gambling from one’s home allows for a variety of techniques that would get one tossed out of a regular casino. The Internet is presently unregulated and we support a federal law regulating Internet gambling.”
Today, Americans spend some $600 billion a year on legal gambling, making it by far the favored national pastime. attorney’s case involved the casinos’ sportsbooks. That partnership leads many observers to believe that an online casino – using Microsoft platforms, of course – is in the works. In January, MegaSports began taking Internet bets from Australians; it expects soon to allow global gambling on sporting events. Passed during the term of crime-fighter Attorney General Robert Kennedy, the law was intended to outlaw betting over telephone lines. The Wire Act obviously has no mention of wagering over the Internet. If, on the other hand, an activity is in the physical world – betting on horses, or casino betting with Indian tribes – it becomes subject to federal criminal sanction when it occurs in cyberspace. Like the Communications Act passed in the 1930s, technology has now leapfrogged the law.
First, legislation should treat physical activity and cyberactivity in the same way. Their case is based on the 1961 Wire Act. FBI agents placed bets on games – uniformly National Football League matches, although many other options are available – and followed up, whether they won or lost. (The company did not respond to repeated requests for an interview.)
Group calls for regulation of Net gambling
For years, another barrier to the growth of Internet gambling has been strong opposition from those most threatened by gambling sites: legal American casinos. Says Sinclair of Christiansen/Cummings: “You are going to feel more comfortable wagering with a Hilton than you will with Joe’s Casino.”
One major barrier to profitability is the law. Failure to account for that specificity in legislation could stifle the Internet’s growth or chill its use as a communications tool. Estimates range from $650 million to $1 billion a year, worldwide – a tiny fraction of the amount spent on more traditional formats. O’Brien observes in Bad Bet, his comprehensive account of America’s gambling industry, “Judging by dollars spent, gambling is now more popular in America than baseball, the movies and Disneyland combined.”
The office of U.S. “And it is possible that records could be subpoenaed of various banks where these companies maintain accounts.”
But the growing acceptance of online betting and the Internet’s inherent ability to shatter jurisdictions bring the inconsistencies of American gaming law to a boil. “Since there are no controls at present regarding Internet wagering, I would urge investors to shun these firms at present,” he says. “I use the service because it’s convenient and I have access to it when I want,” says one online gambler. “Think about what would happen to Wal-Mart (WMT), General Motors or Microsoft if these companies had to continue to dodge federal roadblocks to access their customers,” says Sebastian Sinclair, senior associate at Christiansen/Cummings Associates, a management consulting firm. Would-be wagerers open an account with a credit card, although some sites also accept cash and cashier’s checks. The American Gaming Association, a trade group of gaming firms, maintains this view regarding online wagering: “The industry has been state-regulated and we think it should remain that way. The Justice Department doesn’t think that online casinos (including those that offer gambling on sports events) can legally conduct business in the United States, even if they are based in places where gambling is legal.
Running an online casino carries all the usual challenges of Internet businesses, from low click-through rates to servers that fail. Justice believes that any legislation addressing criminal misuse of computers or computer systems (including the Internet) should have three vital characteristics. They almost always include slots, blackjack and video poker, but many sites carry more exotic games, from baccarat to pai gow. One of Microsoft (MSFT)’s less-publicized adventures is Ninemsn, an Australia-based Internet service to which Bill Gates has pledged tens of millions of dollars. Bets generally range from $1 to as much as $300. Legislators have considered enlisting Internet service providers to patrol for undesirable sites, although Internet gambling insiders consider that proposal dead on arrival. Inland, for example, operates two Web sites in addition to the one bearing Kenny Rogers’ likeness: Casinoaustralia.com and Goodluckclub.com. Aruba, for one, is refusing to extradite any indicted individuals to the U.S., and thus far the U.S. Even the precise number of online casinos is hard to calculate. Almost all online gambling sites work the same. That makes for an Internet gambling environment too porous for U.S law enforcement to plug.
Gambling is as at least as old as Christianity (that is, if Ben Hur can be trusted). A Ninemsn spokesperson says that the site does not now offer online gambling and would not comment on future plans. “I wager on football games and usually bet in the neighborhood of $1,000 every weekend. (The company’s Indian casino and Web-development divisions make more.) “This is the really exciting point, because I know where it goes from here,” Speer said in an interview. citizens, it will be increasingly tempting for them to turn to locations abroad.
The amount spent on Internet gambling is harder to calculate. White’s hesitancy suggests that the law may not be as solid as she thought when she indicted. has had little cooperation from any other nation. About 2,000 years later, Bugsy Siegel took the concept a step further and built the Flamingo Hotel in the desert town of Las Vegas. Why should it be legal to bet online on a horse race in another state, but not legal to bet on a basketball game in one’s own state? If Native American tribes can establish new, legal, physical places where adults can gamble, why shouldn’t someone be able to do the same in cyberspace?
The original version of Kyl’s bill failed most of these tests. Tony Cabot, an attorney specializing in gaming issues, says flatly, “When you see Kerry Packer get together with Microsoft, you have to believe there is a future for this type of wagering.”
Although it uses a CryptoLogic template similar to several other online casinos, Kennyrogerscasino.com may be unique in letting bettors wager as little as a penny at a time. attorney’s office theoretically operate out of the Caribbean. The vast majority of customers will satisfy their demand for commercial gambling through less onerous and risky alternatives, such as lotteries, bingo, pari-mutuels and casinos.”
Internet Gambling Worldwide, Past and Future
Take Interactive Gaming and Communications, another publicly traded company, located in Blue Bell, Pa.
If such gamblers are not satisfied by options available to U.S. In a highly publicized March 1998 “raid,” Mary Jo White, the U.S. That may suggest that, as some legal observers have argued, the 1961 federal Wire Act is too old and too loosely written to prohibit online gambling. For decades, Vegas was about the only legal option for gamblers. The defendants, many of whom live abroad, were threatened with up to five years in prison and $250,000 fines.
Prosecutors focus on sports betting
Intriguingly, though, all the bets that make up the U.S. According to an analysis by Sue Schieder of Rolling Good Times, the online gambling magazine, the new legislation would not punish the casual bettor.
Second, legislation should be technology-neutral. “Ultimately, Internet gambling operators are selling a product. At one point, Interactive Gaming looked like it could be an industry leader.
But a hard-core base will continue to turn to Internet betting for its clear advantages. Says Opel, “Bringing in the big names and established companies only adds credibility and visibility to what we’re already doing.”
Is it legal?
A few hurdles have to be cleared before such ventures can take off – beginning with the federal government. Even the firms that have enjoyed some stock-price popularity – such as Youbet.com – have shaky fundamentals. to gain access to offshore sites,” says Sebastian Sinclair of Christiansen/Cummings
The biggest payoff, $8,000, came on a $1,000 bet placed on the fifth “Survivor” at 8-to-1 odds.
“Throughout the history of ‘Survivor,’ many have believed they knew the outcome of the show,” Ender said. One person was said by BoDog to work in a “production role” for CBS.
An online sportsbook said it has dropped betting on CBS’ “Survivor” after allegedly finding that network employees were wagering – and winning – on the hit reality show.
The Costa Rica-based BoDog.com found at least two CBS employees betting on the show’s outcome, said BoDog spokesman Lance Bradley. Bradley said that bets taken from those alleged to be with CBS skewed the odds significantly on “Survivor” contestants.
At least two players have been identified as CBS employees and other names may be connected to the network or may be aliases, Bradley said. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. He declined further comment on the allegations, or on any action CBS might take.
The players’ current bets on “Survivor: Amazon” have been canceled and their money refunded, Bradley said. The winner is unknown until he or she is chosen in a vote by other contestants during a live broadcast.. All Rights Reserved. The suspicion is they had insider knowledge, he said.
Callers to the Bodog.com offices were told that wagers were no longer being accepted on “Survivor.”
He wasn’t aware of any other possible legal sanctions.
By Lynn Elber
They wagered correctly on who would be the final two contestants in both the fourth and fifth editions of “Survivor,” Bradley said. Odds will be offered on the seventh “Survivor” but all bettors will be carefully monitored, BoDog President Rob Gillespie said in a statement.
For the current “Survivor,” the bets in question affected the odds for contestants Jenna Morasca of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Matthew Von Ertfelda of Washington, D.C.
“Only ‘The X-Files’ has more conspiracy theories than ‘Survivor,'” CBS spokesman Chris Ender said. Most offshore sportsbooks accept such alternative bets, said BoDog’s Bradley.
“We’re pretty sure this is the case,” Bradley said. “Some have been right, many have been wrong.”
Betting on events other than sports or racing is banned in Las Vegas sportsbooks, a spokeswoman for the Nevada Gaming Control Board said Thursday. Asked if BoDog might consider legal action, he replied: “It’s not something we’d want to pursue, as a matter of precedent.”
BoDog requires that bettors must not have knowledge of an event’s outcome. The players in question opened accounts with BoDog before “Survivor: Marquesas,” the fourth show, and bet only on the show and no other events.
The show narrows the field to two finalists in filmed competitions
People think it’s much more complicated, but it’s not.”
Divided action means the sportsbook is guaranteed a profit on the game because of the fee charged to the bettor (called juice or vig – typically $11 bet to win $10). By moving the line, sportsbooks can influence how the public bets on a particular game.
Once betting begins, sportsbooks can adjust the line at any time. Of course there is an entire method to the madness on how the opening line is created. Seba explained that it all starts with each oddsmaker creating a line on each game based upon their own personal approach.
Once a game’s power rating based pointspread is determined, the oddsmaker will make adjustments to that line after considering each team’s most recent games played and previous games played against that opponent. If we’ve done that, we’ve done our job.”
How the Opening Line Is Made
Once the opening line is released by LVSC, the individual sportsbooks decide if they want to make any adjustments before offering it to the public. Mike Seba is a Senior Oddsmaker at LVSC and has been making lines for the last six years. Obviously, if the line comes out a week ahead of the event (which is the case in football), there is much that could happen during the week leading up to the event that could affect the line.
The purpose of these adjustments, like all line adjustments, is to more equally divide the betting action.
Experts working for the individual books having a strong opinion on the game
“The main objective is that our clients get equal action on both sides,” Seba said.
“The #1 thing for us is to make a line for each game that creates good two-way action. This usually includes having up-to-date power ratings on each team.
What Is the Line Trying to Accomplish?
Moving the line is the oddsmaker’s effort to balance betting action, and often times such moves can have a major impact on a bettor’s decision. Each of these oddsmakers bring unique opinions, strengths and weaknesses to the process. Oddsmakers have to determine if any changes are necessary and send out an “adjusted line.”
A round-table discussion among the 4-5 oddsmakers involved in making the line for each sport is then conducted and a consensus line is decided upon by the Odds Director before it is released to the sportsbooks. For example, the public might have heavy betting interest week after week on a popular college football team such as USC. The power ratings are adjusted after each game a team plays. Also, adjustments are made after reading each team’s local newspapers to get a sense of what the coaches & players are thinking going into the game.
The last step in the line-making process for each oddsmaker is taking one final look to determine whether or not the line “feels right.” This is where common sense and past experience with how games are bet enters into the picture.
Oddsmakers at LVSC are professional sports junkies who love what they do and would probably do it for nothing if you asked them, but they do get paid for it.
“You either have a passion for it or you don’t,” Seba said.
Why the Line Changes
For example, if the pointspread on a game is 7 and most of the money is coming in on the underdog (taking the +7), sportsbooks will then move the number down to 6 ½ to try and attract money on the favorite.
Individual books having players who consistently bet with certain tendencies (such as an extreme bias toward favorites or toward a certain popular team like USC)
The opening line is the first line created by the oddsmakers, which is then sent out to sportsbooks.
. We do this by drawing from past experiences and applying them to current situations.
Oddsmakers can also change the line depending on various event-related factors such as player injuries or weather. Examples of non-game factors that would require an adjustment to a team’s power rating are key player injuries and player trades. Of the 4-5 oddsmakers, generally the 2 most respected opinions are weighed more heavily by the Odds Director before he decides on the final line. In our extended interview, Seba explained that there are 4-5 oddsmakers assigned to make lines for each of the major sports (pro & college football and basketball; MLB, NHL, boxing, golf). Reasons for such adjustments include:
There is a common misconception that point spreads represent the oddsmakers’ prediction of how many points the favorite will win by. Stated another way, they want to create a line that half the people find appealing to bet one way while the other half find it appealing to bet the other way (known as ‘dividing the action’). That is not the case at all – their intent is NOT to evenly split the ATS result between the teams; rather, their goal is to attract equal betting action on both sides. If an oddsmaker comes up with a preliminary line of USC -7, then an adjustment up to -7.5 or -8 would be made in response to the public’s expected USC bias.
Las Vegas Sports Consultants (LVSC) is the world’s premier oddsmaking company and the most respected authority on making the lines.
Since the oddsmaker’s ultimate goal is equally dividing the betting action, public perception and betting patterns must be taken into account. Power ratings are the oddsmaker’s value of each team and are used as a guide to calculate a “preliminary” pointspread on an upcoming game. “We’re not trying to pick the team that covers the spread, we’re trying to make it a coin flip, a tough decision (for the bettor). In doing so they attempt to make more attractive the team that is getting less action. By necessity their approach is very research-oriented and concise, since with millions of dollars at risk there is little margin for error
